Regina Ribeiro
Afro Brazilian Soul
“Relacionamentos”
“RELACIONAMENTOS”, (meaning relationships in portuguease) is the title of a new CD by Regina Ribeiro released in Switzerland, in 2009.
Regina Ribeiro’s completely authentic, original and brand new repertoire, is the result of the great efforts and research invested by the artist and her musicians over the last 3 years.
The album “Relacionamentos” was beautifully produced by the Brazilian producer, arranger, composer and multi-instrumentist Glaucus Linx.
The music of “Relacionamentos” is a fusion of the ancestral Afro-Brazilian rhythm Ijexá, the Samba and Soul Music, a unique blend of African Samba Jazz.
Singer, composer and dancer Regina Ribeiro, was born in São Paulo, Brazil, where she grew up and studied dance and music.
At the age of 23 she left home in order to go to the U.S.A. There, she represented Brazil at the Lowell Arts Festival (Lowell, Ma), conducted several workshops in Boston and continued her dance studies in New York. After that, she lived in Paris and travelled to Ivory Coast and Ghana (West África) to do research in african traditional dance. In 1983 she established in Switzerland, where she has been participating in a great number of intercultural projects. Far beyond the traditional Samba Regina Ribeiro’s Brazilian dance is between Africa and
America. The choreographic creation for “Relacionamentos” is the perfect illustration of the project, featuring a crosssection of Afro- Brazilian and Modern Dance.
Regina Ribeiro’s Music and Dance Project is a group of professional musicians and dancers from Brazil, Cuba, Angola, Italy and Switzerland, who live in Bern, Zurich, Locarno and Zürich.
The Band: Regina Ribeiro (Brazil), Concept, l.vocal, composition, dance, Elias Moreira (Brazil), Guitar and B.Vocals, Toni Schiavano (Italy), Bass, compositions, arrangements, Luis Ribeiro (Brazil), percussion, compositions, arrangements , Florian Reiche (Switzerland) drums and Claude Bowald (Switzerland), Guitar and B.Vocals.
The Ballet: Naima Bärlocher (Brazil/ Switzerland) Moritz Stäubli (Switzerland), Reinier Powel (Cuba) and Isabel Lunkembisa(Angola/ Switzerland)
Through “Relacionamentos”, Regina Ribeiro is not only dealing with human relationships, she is also addressing the issues of reconciling conflicting character traits for the sake of our inner harmony.
Just as the groove, the beautiful melodies and harmonies, the lyrics of the songs and their messages play an essential part in Regina Ribeiro’s music. This album’s lyrics are in Brazilian Portuguese and a small part of the repertoire is in Yoruba and English. In concerts outside of Brazil and the Portuguese speaking world, the artist provides an English or French commentary about the content of each piece of music so that the public can appreciate the essence of her work.
The encounter between the different mentalities, cultures, musical and dance backgrounds of the artists makes for an intense and exhilarating mixture. The band members’ different personalities combine perfection with spontaneity, which results in a sound that touches the heart, inspires the mind and moves the feet.
It’s an intercultural dialogue at the beginning of a new millennium
